The Actor's Upskilling programme has ended for 2011. Watch out for the launch of a newly developed programme for 2012. For an idea of the up-skilling courses we offer, check out the courses we've held over the year: Terrify Yourself (Public Speaking) “The best way to sound like you know what you are talking about is to know what you are talking about” Anon Terrify Yourself is an innovative 4 week course including public speaking skills, performance poetry and stand up comedy. Public speaking means to stand up in front of other human beings and communicate. Raewyn and Jaq take you through ways to develop how you talk about your work, online (skype), at an important event/ presentation or in a public arena, even to someone you care about. By giving you more confidence in class through a series of funny, serious, matter-of-fact and relaxing exercises you will find ways to communicate to just about anybody. This course is about being heard. A great course to end your 2011 year with! Ever wanted to try your hand at writing and performing a comedy skit or developing a comic character? This class is for anyone who wants to get together with a group of people to workshop comedy skits or character performances. We will look at other comic performances and play around to write and develop short comic performances to perform in front of the group. It will be lots of fun and supportive. Laughter is the spice of life! Accents This six week course focuses on how to learn accents in general, addressing a few specific ones in order to put the new skills into practice. Accents for Actors provides actors with a reliable system to approach ANY accent they require. Facility is achieved through developing sensory awareness and refining specific vocal skills. Actors will learn how to deconstruct an accent into its component sounds in order to rebuild it within their own character's voice with authenticity and confidence. By demystifying the acting voice and empowering actors through practical knowledge, Jon brings to the forefront an appreciation for the "bare-all truth" of the voice as the most immediate and important means of communication. Acting for Screen Acting Technique (based on Michael Chekhov acting technique) Through this course you will learn powerful and widely known elements of the Michael. Chekhov technique: such as atmosphere, psychological gestures and centres. In the late 1920s, Chekhov emigrated from Russia and set up a studio in Germany teaching a physical and imagination-based system of actor training. In this technique, the actor physicalises their character's need for internal dynamic in the form of external gestures. Subsequently, the outward gesture is suppressed and re-incorporated internally, allowing the physical memory to inform the performance on an unconscious level.
This technique is designed to bring the actor instantly into character and it used today by many great actors like Anthony Hopkins, Jack Nicholson and Johnny Depp. You will acquire new skills and vocabulary that speaks directly to your performer's mind and imagination. You will discover the freedom and joy of acting by truly creating a Character. Through acting exercises and improvisation you will nourish and empower your unique talent and experience your individualized creativity. The Creature Within The Creature Within workshop is about finding out about physical characterization and the impact of space, environment and other occupants of that space. Mark incorporates voice as a key element of the improvisational structure of the sessions to tap into emotional depths and range of the physical embodiment of character. Techniques including Laban and the exciting improvisational 'Union Jack' will enable the actor in class to let go, crack the shell and release 'the creature within' culminating in a powerful and liberating informal studio performance of a scene from Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
Directing actors PASNZ Directing course is designed to create a dialogue between directors and actors. Using the elements of the Michael Chekhov acting technique you will acquire new skills and vocabulary that will bridge the gap between the actors’ creative process and the directors’ creative interpretation. You will gain knowledge about the acting process and learn how to direct your self or others with truth and integrity. Through a series of exercises each student explores their own ways of communicating vision, inspiration to others and empowering uniqueness in performance. In this way you will learn how to deepen your commitment to collaborative work, while directing others. Improvisation for Actors PASNZ offers a chance to let loose your wildish creativity. Improvisation is the essence to being a strong, confident and spontaneous performer/actor. This course will take you through a series of exercises and techniques to allow you to find your own unique expression of improv. Find the joy in letting go of previous inhibitions and putting yourself 'out there' yet still in a supportive, group environment. Each week the class will have a specific focus, from group work such as impulse and flock of seagulls to more individual explorations using some Al Wunder techniques (i.e abstract, pedestrian, character, and caricature). At various stages presentations will take place to allow for experimentation and feedback. Speaking what you love: language and poetrytutor: Sylvia Rands Speaking what you love: language and poetry is a short course for speakers and writers to develop a profound relationship with a voice that brings words and communication alive. Moving beyond the traditional approach of the voice being merely an instrument, Sylvia works at a deeper level connecting the individual voice, spoken language and its poetical inclination to the whole person. Performance elements of creativity and confidence both benefit from this approach. Sylvia's unique vocal training is an approach which has been based around Elemental Voice work, evolved out of the work several great teachers: Kristin Linklater, Lichtenberg Institute of Sound Training, Continuum Movement & Pantheatre/ Roy Hart. Taking on the Text This course explores a mixture of scripts, each needing something special from the actor. We will find ways to unlock the clues on the page in order to make exciting, brave and intelligent choices on the rehearsal room floor, as well as banking some tricks for sight-reading and auditions. Suitable for performers of any experience, this course seeks to make a script the actor’s number one tool.
tutor: Stephen Butterworth Triple Threat was a term initially coined to describe a football player who was a skillful runner, passer, and kicker. We have lifted the phrase to describe building a person to be adept in three performance skills. Triple Threat is a great deal of fun as well as challenging with weekly musical theatre sessions for anyone with a passion to try out theatre, song and dance. Riding on the back of a successful Triple Threat in 2010, The Performing Arts School of New Zealand has brought back the wonderful Stephen Butterworth to give Aucklanders the chance to strut their stuff. This eight week workshop culminates in an informal theatre performance for friends, family and supportive public! Whats the Story Auckland?
